What is a broker and how does it work?

What is a broker? A broker is a person or company authorized to buy and sell stocks or other investments. If you want to buy stocks, you will almost always need a broker — essentially, a middleman — to place those orders on your behalf. These days, many people open a brokerage account with online brokers rather than working with a person.

What is day trading?

Day trading is the act of buying and selling the same security over the course of a single trading day. For example, let’s say you purchase three shares of Apple stock when the market opens and sell them that same afternoon.

What is an example of a full service broker?

Examples of a full service broker might include offerings from a company such as Morgan Stanley or Goldman Sachs or even Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Such companies may also use their broker services on behalf of themselves or corporate clients to make large block equity trades.
